$260.5M COMMONWEALTH INVESTMENT
The Cape York Region Package is a $260.5 million program of works jointly funded by the Australian and Queensland Governments to upgrade critical infrastructure on Cape York Peninsula.
The package consists of 3 sub-programs:
- $200 million program of works to progressively extend the seal on the Peninsula Developmental Road (PDR) between Lakeland and Weipa over 4 years;
- $10 million over 4 years for sealing works on the remaining gravel sections of Endeavour Valley Road through to Hope Vale;
- $50.5 million for priority community infrastructure works identified by the Torres and Cape Indigenous Mayors Alliance for projects that upgrade and improve infrastructure such as roads, barge and boat ramps, water and sewerage). The works will be carried out in Aurukun, Kowanyama, Lockhart River, Mapoon, Napranum, Northern Peninsula Area, Pormpuraaw and Wujal Wujal communities.
Improved access to Cape York for freight, tourists and other road users, improved safety, reduced ongoing road maintenance costs, improved community infrastructure, and employment, training and business development opportunities for Indigenous and non-Indigenous people.
Improving critical transport and community infrastructure for the Cape remains a priority for RDA FNQ&TS to improve economic development and social outcomes for the region.
RDA FNQ&TS continues to work with the Department of Transport and Main Roads and the Federal Department of Infrastructure and Regional Development leading implementation supported by the Department of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Partnerships and the Federal Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet to maximize outcomes from the project with strong local community and industry engagement through the Taskforce and the Sub Working Group.
The Australian Government has committed $208.4 million to the Cape York Regional Package from 2014-15 to 2018-19, with the Queensland Government contributing $52.1 million.
